Dr. Peter Attia, a well-known expert on longevity, has stepped down from his role as a contributor at CBS News. This change comes amid controversy due to his emails with Jeffrey Epstein being released. Attia hasn’t been accused of any wrongdoing related to Epstein, but his correspondence raised eyebrows.
A spokesperson for Attia explained that his role was new and hadn’t yet begun to take off. He decided to resign to prevent any distractions from CBS News’s important work. The Hollywood Reporter was among the first to report the news.
In February, CBS even pulled a segment featuring Attia from a “60 Minutes” airing after the emails became public. These emails were part of a much larger release by the Department of Justice, which included numerous documents concerning Epstein’s criminal activities.
Attia’s departure coincided with the arrest of former UK Ambassador Peter Mandelson, also linked to Epstein. It’s worth noting that many prominent figures have faced scrutiny after being mentioned in the DOJ files, but simply being listed doesn’t mean someone is guilty.
In a post on X, Attia clarified that his interactions with Epstein had nothing to do with criminal activity. He expressed regret over some emails, admitting they were “embarrassing” and “indefensible.” One particular email exchange included a reference to a shipment of medication, which he now perceives as juvenile and distasteful. He explained that he got to know Epstein in 2014 while raising funds for scientific research.
Statistics suggest that trust in institutions has been shaken in recent years, especially after high-profile scandals. A survey from Pew Research Center found that only about 13% of Americans trust the media—a significant decrease over the past decade. This decline in trust likely intensifies the public’s scrutiny of figures like Attia as news breaks.
In contrast, Attia pointed out that he never engaged in any illegal acts nor associated with Epstein in any damaging way. He met Epstein several times during the height of his public persona and did thoroughly question him about his past.
Attia’s situation highlights the importance of transparency and accountability, especially in high-stakes professional environments. As public interest and scrutiny grow, it’s clear that even distant affiliations can impact reputations.
