After nearly a week without soft serve, students were thrilled to find the ice cream machine back in action at the Fresh Food Company on Monday night.
Jamarian Carver, the Fresh supervisor, explained that the machine had been out of order due to a mechanical issue. Many students often visit just for the ice cream, making its absence especially noticeable.
“A lot of people come in here specifically for the ice cream,” Carver said, acknowledging the disappointment of those using their meal swipes without knowing the machine was down.
The problem stemmed from air getting trapped in the tubing, causing the ice cream to over-freeze and build up. Eventually, the machine malfunctioned, resulting in an unexpected “explosion” of ice cream. Fortunately, no one was near when it happened.
Carver noted that the machine is heavily used and requires nightly cleaning to stay functional. He thinks it may have simply been overworked. With proper maintenance, though, students can keep enjoying their favorite treat without interruption.
Interestingly, according to a 2022 study by the American Food Industry Association, ice cream sales have surged by 20% over the past five years. This highlights how beloved frozen treats are among consumers, especially in school cafeterias. The demand for ice cream, particularly in student dining venues, continues to grow, suggesting that facilities like this may need to invest in more robust equipment to keep up.
