Transforming Refugee Care: Join Us for the Cramer Lectureship on Compassionate Solutions

The UNMC College of Nursing is hosting the 13th Anna Marie Jensen Cramer Memorial Lectureship on March 3. This event focuses on women’s and children’s health.

Heather Hanegan, a women’s health nurse practitioner from The Ohio State University, will be the speaker. Her lecture is titled “Compassion in a Global Society: Providing Health Education for Refugee Women.”

People can join in person at the Sorrell Center, 649 S. 42nd St., Room 4053 on the UNMC Omaha campus or attend virtually via Zoom after registration.

A reception will kick off the event at 1:30 PM, followed by a welcome from 1:45 PM to 2 PM. The main lecture is scheduled for 2 to 3 PM.

This lectureship honors Berniece Cramer, who wanted to bridge art and science in nursing. She earned the 1989 U.S. Public Health Service Nurse of the Year award for her work in elevating the health of mothers and children.

The lecture will:

  • Explain terms like immigrant, refugee, and asylum seeker, and how these affect access to healthcare.
  • Discuss compassionate, trauma-informed care for refugee women.
  • Highlight the health risks and trauma that refugee women face.
  • Share strategies for culturally sensitive maternal health education.

Understanding the complexities of health care for refugee populations is crucial. A recent study by the World Health Organization found that refugees often encounter barriers such as language difficulties and lack of resources, which can severely impact their health outcomes. Engaging with these communities in a respectful and informed way can lead to better health and integration into society.

Collectively, these discussions will add depth to our understanding of health education for vulnerable populations, reflecting a growing awareness of global health challenges.
