Michael and Nicole Borrell started their journey as food critics in 2021, focusing on Lebanon Valley’s dining scene. Their mission? To provide honest reviews of local restaurants. In partnership with LebTown, we’re excited to share their insights with you. Enjoy!
Welcome back to the Lebanon Valley Breakfast Wars! This season, three local restaurants will compete for the title of Best Breakfast in the Valley.
Today, we’re visiting the Richland Railroad Diner, a cozy spot near the tracks. It’s popular, so expect a busy atmosphere, especially during peak hours. Their menu features a variety of breakfast classics like omelets, skillets, and sweet treats.
This time, we ordered the Southern Benedict and Peanut Butter Crunch pancakes. The Southern Benedict, priced at $8.99, pairs two over-medium eggs with a biscuit drenched in sausage gravy, served alongside home fries. You can choose between deep-fried potatoes or hash browns. The gravy is rich and flavorful, with chunky sausage that stands out. And let’s not forget the biscuits—they’re soft and fluffy, perfect for starting the day right.
Now, onto the Peanut Butter Crunch pancakes ($9.49). These were topped with warm peanut butter, granola, powdered sugar, and whipped cream. The dish looked amazing right from the start. The crunchy granola and warm peanut butter blended together beautifully. Even though syrup came on the side, we found it unnecessary. The balanced flavor made every bite enjoyable.
Interestingly, the popularity of breakfast items like pancakes and Benedicts reflects a broader trend. According to a recent survey by the National Restaurant Association, breakfast sales in restaurants have surged by nearly 30% over the past five years. More people are indulging in breakfast outside their homes, partly driven by a growing interest in brunch culture.
After our meal, we couldn’t resist bringing half of the pancakes home. Adding banana on top turned them into another level of deliciousness—definitely a game-changer for future breakfasts!
So, did we just discover the Best Breakfast in the Valley? Stay tuned as we wrap up our tasting adventures and share our thoughts on who takes the crown. What do you think? Who will emerge as the winner of this season’s Breakfast Wars?
