The Hofstra University softball team recently faced off against George Mason University, losing 6-3 at the George Mason Tournament. This tough game left Hofstra at 1-7 for the season, while George Mason improved to 5-3.
In the game, Victoria Frobosilo stood out with two hits for Hofstra. For the Patriots, Kaleigh Friend and Payton Auerbach each had two hits and an RBI, contributing to their victory.
Freshman Madison Steppe started for Hofstra, allowing three earned runs on six hits over three innings. Kailyn Haig followed in relief, pitching another three innings with two earned runs allowed.
George Mason’s pitching was strong. Starter Bri Lencz kept the Pride in check, and Abbey Lane came in to shut out Hofstra for four innings.
In the second inning, George Mason struck first. Logan Pickford led off with a single and went to second on an error. Friend then hit a double for the first run of the game. She attempted to stretch it into a triple but was caught out.
Hofstra struggled at the plate while George Mason kept the pressure on. In the third inning, Auerbach’s single set the tone, leading to a triple by Madi Sobota that brought in two runs.
The Pride managed to tie the game in the fourth. Two errors helped Gabby Sultan get into scoring position, followed by Mackenzie Fitzgerald’s RBI double. Nicole Cancel’s single brought in two more runs, making it 3-3.
However, George Mason quickly responded. With Haig on the mound, a single by Friend brought in Auerbach, followed by another single that added two more runs, putting the Patriots up 6-3.
Both teams’ pitching tightened up for the remainder of the game, limiting any scoring opportunities.
Looking ahead, Hofstra will aim for a turnaround at the Lakeside Book Company Invitational in Harrisburg, Virginia. They’re set to take on the University at Buffalo and James Madison University. JMU notably reached the Women’s College World Series in 2021, showcasing their strength.
