Winthrop University Lacrosse Stars Shine
Winthrop University is buzzing with excitement after two seniors, Tori Iannotti and Gabby Pierpont, picked up weekly honors in the Big South Conference. Iannotti earned Player of the Week, while Pierpont claimed the title of Defensive Player of the Week.
Iannotti had a standout performance, scoring 10 goals on just 13 shots. That’s a remarkable shooting percentage of 86.7%. She kicked off the week with four goals against Campbell and then scored six more in an unforgettable double-overtime win against Queens. This victory marked Winthrop’s first-ever win over Queens, showcasing Iannotti’s crucial role in the team’s success.
On the defensive side, Pierpont made significant contributions. She recorded four ground balls, five caused turnovers, and three draw controls in two games. Against Campbell, she added two goals and a draw control. In the pivotal matchup against Queens, Pierpont excelled defensively, notching a career-high four caused turnovers and matching her best with four ground balls. Her efforts were key to helping Winthrop secure their historic win.
The recognition of both players highlights the team’s growth and potential in the conference. According to the NCAA, women’s lacrosse has seen a 47% increase in participation over the past decade, making achievements like these even more significant.
