In his second-term State of the Union address, President Donald Trump highlighted economic successes, especially in healthcare, even as many Americans feel healthcare costs are rising. Recent polls show that over half of the population believes healthcare has become less affordable for them and their families.
Trump claimed his administration has reduced prescription drug costs significantly. He urged Congress to make this change permanent, warning that future administrations might undo these gains. However, this “Most Favored Nation” policy has faced skepticism from some Republicans and from industry groups like PhRMA, which argue it could harm U.S. competitiveness and overlook broader healthcare issues.
Recently, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator, Mehmet Oz, defended the policy, stating it could help protect drug prices against steep cuts by future administrations.
As midterm elections approach, Democrats have made healthcare affordability central to their campaigns. They note that failing to renew Affordable Care Act tax credits has led to higher premiums for many Americans. In contrast, a Republican-led spending cut could mean over a trillion dollars less for healthcare, particularly Medicaid, but these cuts won’t take effect until after the elections.
In response to rising healthcare costs, Trump introduced the “Great American Health Plan.” The administration has also launched TrumpRx, a website intended to show consumers lower prices for prescription drugs when paid for without insurance. An analysis of this tool found that cheaper generic options are often available elsewhere.
Trump mentioned a shift in government funding from insurance companies to Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). He argued that individuals should receive this money directly instead of letting insurance companies profit.
The administration is also escalating its fight against fraud in government programs. Trump highlighted ongoing investigations in various states. Notably, a recent video by YouTuber Nick Shirley claimed to expose fraud in Minnesota’s childcare centers, leading to action by the Department of Health and Human Services.
A more controversial topic he addressed was gender-affirming care. Trump criticized policies that allow schools to make decisions about students’ gender identity without parental consent. His administration has pushed many restrictions on this type of care, leading to mixed responses from experts and advocates.
Interestingly, some significant healthcare issues were absent from his lengthy address. Vaccines were notably not mentioned, despite previous criticism from Trump focused on childhood vaccine schedules. There’s been upheaval within the HHS, particularly concerning vaccine policies since Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took over as Secretary.
Also missing was any reference to the expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits, which have pushed costs up for millions. Though Trump spoke about making healthcare accessible, he didn’t address these credits directly, despite their significant impact on affordability.
Lastly, Trump’s speech overlooked recent Medicaid cuts and reductions in the health workforce. These changes could affect millions and have been met with concern from healthcare advocates.
