Important Update: WhatsApp’s New SIM Verification Process for Indian Users—What You Need to Know!

WhatsApp is planning to introduce a new SIM verification feature for its users in India. This move is in line with new regulations set by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) aimed at enhancing security for messaging services. The aim is to make sure that every WhatsApp account remains linked to an active SIM card.

Currently, users can log into WhatsApp with just a 6-digit code, which doesn’t check if the phone number is still active. This gap can be exploited by cybercriminals who might misuse disconnected or reassigned numbers. The new regulation will force platforms like WhatsApp to enforce periodic SIM verification, linking users’ accounts to their active phone numbers regularly.

In recent testing, this new feature was found in WhatsApp’s beta update, indicating it’s still under development. Once rolled out, users will need to verify their number periodically to maintain access to their accounts. This means if anyone is using emulators like Bluestacks, they may face issues, as verification will likely restrict or block access.

Users will receive prompts to enter a new 6-digit code to confirm their number’s validity. It’s important to note that this will only affect users with an Indian phone number (+91). WhatsApp users outside India won’t see any changes, and the existing two-step verification will still operate normally.

As the tech landscape grows, experts emphasize the importance of such security measures. According to a recent survey by Cybersecurity Ventures, cybercrime is expected to cost the world $10.5 trillion annually by 2025. By enforcing stricter measures like SIM verification, WhatsApp aims to bolster security and protect its users from potential threats.

This transition, while necessary, will be rolled out gradually. WhatsApp is currently fine-tuning the infrastructure required for this service, ensuring it works smoothly before a wider launch.
