India’s First Hydrogen Locomotive Trial: A Green Leap Forward
The first trial run of India’s hydrogen locomotive took place on Wednesday in Jind, Haryana. This marks an exciting step toward eco-friendly train travel for Indian Railways.
The train left the Jind yard around 7 a.m., initially powered by a diesel engine to gain momentum. At 8:25 a.m., it made its way to Sonipat. Railway officials are carefully tracking key aspects like engine speed, brake performance, fuel usage, and safety protocols throughout the test. For safety, only a small amount of hydrogen was onboard, allowing the diesel backup to quickly re-engage if necessary.
The first full test will see the locomotive running solely on hydrogen. The planned journey will take it from Jind to Pindara and on to Bhambheva station. If successful, this hydrogen train could soon be part of regular service along the Jind-Sonipat route, where three diesel trains currently operate.
Built at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, this hydrogen engine is among the world’s most advanced. It boasts a powerful 1200-horsepower engine with a maximum speed of 150 km/h, although it will usually operate between 110 km/h and 140 km/h. Once in service, the train could cut the travel time from Jind to Sonipat—approximately 90 km—down to under an hour. Plus, it operates quietly, enhancing passenger comfort.
The train will feature eight to ten coaches, offering a capacity similar to existing diesel trains. It utilizes hydrogen fuel cell technology to generate electricity through a combination of hydrogen and oxygen, replacing diesel. This innovative approach produces only steam and water as byproducts.
A specialized hydrogen production and refueling facility has been established at the Jind junction, costing around Rs 120 crore. This facility will require about 40,000 liters of water each hour, sourced through rainwater harvesting from station roofs.
Historically, hydrogen trains are gaining traction worldwide. Countries like Germany, Sweden, Japan, and China have already launched similar initiatives. India’s venture positions it as the fifth nation to embrace this technology, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and a self-sufficient future.
According to a recent survey by Railway Research Institute, 70% of Indian citizens support environmentally friendly transportation initiatives. This trial could signify a shift in public transport perceptions, moving towards more sustainable practices.
As progress continues, railway officials urge the public to maintain a safe distance during testing. If successful, this trial could usher in a new era for Indian Railways, embracing cleaner, greener travel solutions.
