Chula Vista has just launched its first city-run food pantry, aimed at tackling food insecurity in the South Bay. This pantry, opened in partnership with Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego, had an informal ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Civic Center Chula Vista Public Library.
Located at 365 F St., the pantry is set to officially open on March 4. It will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 7 p.m. The idea is to provide essential food items to residents, helping families, seniors, and individuals facing tough times.
Mayor John McCann emphasized the importance of this pantry, calling it “a meaningful investment” for the community. He said it would support those in need while ensuring that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
Alyson Hamlin, a senior librarian at the Civic Center, shared that food insecurity affects many residents, including families and the unhoused. She believes this pantry will connect people to necessary resources in a familiar and welcoming environment.
This initiative comes after city officials and Feeding San Diego hosted food distribution events last summer. These events drew large crowds, with long lines forming before they even started. Most of the food available ran out quickly. The high turnout highlighted a significant need in the community, prompting the establishment of the new pantry.
Appaswamy “Vino” Pajanor, CEO of Catholic Charities Diocese, expressed pride in partnering with Chula Vista. He noted that providing food in trusted spaces like the library helps reach those in need effectively. Their aim is to ensure that no family has to face hunger alone.
Studies have shown that food insecurity can impact health and well-being significantly. According to a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, over 10% of U.S. households face food insecurity at some point each year. Local efforts like these are essential for combating this pressing issue.
