Meet Iowa State University’s New President David Cook: A Visionary Leader in Research and Innovation Joining the World Food Prize Foundation Board

February 26, 2026 (Des Moines, IA) — The World Food Prize Foundation has welcomed David Cook, the president-designate of Iowa State University, to its Board of Directors.

“Cook’s leadership experience at a land-grant university aligns perfectly with our goals,” said Paul Schickler, Chair of the Board. “His commitment to academic excellence and collaboration will be invaluable as we work to tackle global hunger.”

The Board of Directors ensures the Foundation’s financial health. They adopt budgets and select officers, with each member serving a three-year term. Cook steps into this role as Wendy Wintersteen, the outgoing president of Iowa State, concludes her term.

Starting on March 1, Cook will be the 17th president of Iowa State University. Before this, he helmed North Dakota State University, where he focused on improving student enrollment, retention, and community partnerships.

“Joining the World Food Prize Foundation Board is a significant honor,” Cook stated. “Iowa State is steadfast in addressing global hunger. Together, we aim to drive research and inspire future leaders.”

A graduate of Iowa State, Cook holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and speech communication. He also earned his master’s and Ph.D. in organizational communication from the University of Kansas. His previous roles include leadership positions at both the University of Kansas and the University of Kansas Medical Center. Notably, Cook has secured nearly $11 million in grant funding, published nearly 70 research articles, and taught over 25 courses, focusing on areas such as health policy and strategic marketing.

The World Food Prize honors individuals who enhance global food quality and availability. Founded by Nobel laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug during the Green Revolution, the Prize has celebrated 56 distinguished individuals. Each year, the Borlaug International Dialogue hosts discussions on food insecurity, bringing together experts to address critical issues related to hunger.

Cook’s appointment comes at a crucial time. With global food insecurity on the rise, experts project that 1 in 10 people worldwide face hunger today, according to a recent UN report. Collaborations with leaders like Cook aim to create innovative solutions to this pressing problem. As he steps into his new role, his commitment to agriculture, research, and education will play a vital part in shaping the future of food security globally.
