PHOENIX — Cindy McCain is stepping down as the executive director of the World Food Programme (WFP) after two years in the role. She plans to resign in three months to prioritize her health.
“Serving this incredible organization has been the honor of a lifetime,” McCain said in her Thursday announcement. “This is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make.”
Last year, McCain experienced a mild stroke. She returned to work in January, but her health has not fully recovered. “WFP’s mission is vital,” she explained. “I had hoped to complete my term, but my health is a priority.”
Despite her resignation, McCain plans to stay active in advocacy. “I will remain WFP’s biggest champion and continue to be a voice for those struggling with hunger,” she added.
Before her role at WFP, McCain served as the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. agencies focused on food and agriculture. She is also well-known as the widow of Arizona U.S. Senator John McCain.
