When people talk about dining in Providence, Al Forno is often at the top of the list. This restaurant, run by a husband-and-wife team with backgrounds in art, opened its doors in 1980. Over the decades, it’s become a beloved spot, with many claiming it helped elevate Providence’s culinary scene.
Every visit to Al Forno feels like an event. Whether it’s a spontaneous dinner or a special occasion, I always start with their famous grilled pizza. The pepperoni and seasonal sweet corn options are crowd favorites that are great for sharing.
Inside, the atmosphere is lively and bustling. The two-story brick building has a cozy vibe, with several dining areas and a bar near the entrance. During my recent visit, we were seated by a window, enjoying the energy buzzing around us.
This time, I tried a new seasonal pizza topped with mushrooms, cheese, and scallions on their signature grilled crust ($26). The crust is a standout feature, charred perfectly over a wood fire, giving it that smoky flavor. A slice is easy to fold, creating a delightful, chewy bite.
Next, I couldn’t resist the pasta. The baked shells ($25) come bubbling in a ceramic dish, rich with melted cheese and a creamy pomodoro sauce, perfect for sharing. My absolute favorite, though, is the rigatoni bolognese ($26). The pasta is perfectly cooked, swimming in a hearty veal and pork sauce that keeps me coming back for more. Other places just can’t compare.
Al Forno also offers some standout entrees, like the dirty steak ($49) and clam roast ($36). Both dishes are flavorful and come with generous sides of rustic mashed potatoes. The steak, served medium rare, is tender and juicy, soaking in a delicious dark jus. The clam roast, combined with spicy sausages and sautéed onions, is a delightful surprise that always impresses.
At many restaurants, dessert is an afterthought. Not at Al Forno. Desserts are a must-order and come prepared to perfection. On my last visit, I had the fig tart ($22) with house-made banana chocolate chunk ice cream ($16). The combination of the soft crust and sweet filling, paired with the creamy ice cream, was a perfect ending to an amazing meal.
Dining at Al Forno is more than just eating; it’s an experience. The friendly service and vibrant atmosphere draw you in and make you want to linger just a little longer. The food tells a story rich with tradition and creativity that every visitor should explore.
With local restaurants increasingly going online for reservations, Al Forno maintains its charm with a welcoming environment. Its continued success shows how dedication to quality can create a lasting culinary legacy in Rhode Island.
Did you know that according to the National Restaurant Association, more than 50% of adults dine out at least once a week? Al Forno’s popularity is a testament to how a great dining experience can keep people coming back time and again.
