Lions Roar to Victory: Record-Breaking Win Against USF – Loyola Marymount University Athletics

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – LMU women’s basketball made history on Thursday night by defeating the University of San Francisco 66-57 at the War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. This win not only brings their overall record to 20-8 but also makes them just the third team in the program’s history to reach this milestone. The previous teams to hit 20 wins were in 2000-01 and the notable 2003-04 squad.

This victory is particularly special as it sets a new program record for most conference wins in a single season. The Lions improve to 14-3 in WCC play, surpassing the previous record of 13 wins set back in 2003-04. Head Coach Aarika Hughes has led the team to an impressive eight-game winning streak, the longest since that same historic season.

During the game, LMU showcased resilience. They closed out the final quarter with a commanding 25-point push, securing their lead. Jess Lawson stood out with 17 points and 7 rebounds, showcasing her talent at the free-throw line, scoring 11 of 14 attempts. Andjela Matic also contributed significantly with 15 points, including two crucial three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Allison Clarke added 9 points, while Paula Reus Piza provided valuable moments off the bench with 8 points and 5 rebounds.

Despite a slow start, trailing 17-13 after the first quarter, LMU turned the game around with a solid defensive effort. They held San Francisco to just 7 points in the second quarter, allowing them to gain momentum and ultimately take control of the game.

With this victory, LMU is emerging as a strong contender in the WCC and is turning heads with their performance. Their depth and strategic play are evident, making them a team to watch as they head into postseason play at the WCC Tournament.

Looking to the future, the Lions will close out their regular season on Saturday, February 28, against Oregon State University. After that, they’ll prepare for the WCC Tournament, where they hope to continue their winning ways.

As of now, many fans are buzzing on social media about the success of the team. Hashtags like #LionsOnFire are trending, showing the community’s support and excitement for LMU basketball. These interactions reflect a growing enthusiasm for women’s sports, which have gained more visibility and support in recent years.
