Transform Waste into a Climate Solution: Discover the Power of Enhanced Rock Weathering

We’re excited to work with ZeroEx and Isometric on a project that merges cutting-edge technology with our operational expertise to tackle climate change using enhanced rock weathering (ERW).

ERW is a powerful, cost-effective way to remove carbon from our atmosphere. It uses ferronickel slag, which is a byproduct from the smelting process. This not only helps reduce carbon but also has benefits for agriculture. By recycling mining waste, we can create a tool for lasting carbon removal.

This method of carbon mitigation focuses on using our assets wisely. ERW fits perfectly with our aim to turn waste into an effective way to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air.

So, what exactly is ERW? It’s an approach that speeds up natural weathering. Normally, CO2 reacts with rainwater to form carbonic acid. This acid slowly breaks down rocks rich in magnesium or calcium, leading to a natural storage of carbon. In ERW, we crush specific rocks and blend them into soils. This process increases the surface area for the chemical reactions, speeding up carbon capture.

Our project, called Project Earthstone, uses magnesium-rich slag from our Brazilian operations. This slag weathers faster than natural rock and acts as a mineral fertilizer, benefiting farmers while absorbing CO2. Not only does it improve soil health, but it also boosts crop productivity by correcting pH levels and providing much-needed magnesium, which is often lacking in Brazilian soils.

Experts point out that using mineral fertilizers not only enhances agriculture but also promotes sustainable practices. A 2022 study showed that enhanced rock weathering could potentially sequester 2.5 billion tons of CO2 annually, highlighting its significant role in addressing climate change.

On social media, many farmers and environmental advocates are sharing success stories about using ERW methods. The trend is gaining attention, showing a growing interest in sustainable farming and climate solutions.

This innovative approach to carbon management not only addresses environmental concerns but also supports farming needs, demonstrating a practical path forward in the fight against climate change.
