A Rare Lunar Eclipse on the Horizon
If you’re in North or South America, get ready for a stunning sight! A total lunar eclipse, often called a “blood moon,” will take place soon. This celestial event will turn the moon a striking red, and it won’t happen again until late 2028.
This eclipse is set for Tuesday morning, where it will be fully visible in North America and parts of Central and South America. Those in Australia and eastern Asia can catch it that night. For other regions, like Africa and Europe, sadly, it will be difficult to see.
So, what causes these eclipses? They happen when the sun, Earth, and moon align perfectly. NASA tells us that there are usually four to seven eclipses each year. Our last celestial spectacle was a “ring of fire” solar eclipse just two weeks ago, which was a big hit even among penguins in Antarctica!
During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth casts a shadow on the moon. This results in those beautiful red hues, caused by sunlight filtering through our atmosphere. The total eclipse phase lasts about an hour, offering plenty of time to enjoy the view.
Catherine Miller, an expert at Middlebury College, describes the lunar eclipse as a more relaxed experience compared to a solar eclipse. No special equipment is required—just your eyes and a clear sky.
