Exciting Upgrades Coming to Houston’s NRG Stadium for the 2026 FIFA World Cup: What Fans Can Expect!

NRG Stadium is set to make significant changes in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will include seven matches in Houston.

Chris Canetti, the president of the local World Cup host committee, shared that the first project will start this summer. This will involve adjustments to the soccer field to meet FIFA’s standards.

“We need to remove some seats in the corners to expand the field area,” Canetti explained. FIFA has strict guidelines about the space needed around the pitch. The stadium’s current design does not allow enough room, so some corners must be altered.

The second project aims to install a natural grass field. This will begin right after the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in March 2026.

Canetti noted, “Planning is going very well to ensure we have top-quality grass for over 40 days.” This includes coordinating with top experts to make it happen smoothly.

The first match in Houston kicks off on June 14, 2026, followed by matches every three days, culminating in a Round of 16 knockout game on July 4.

It would be exciting to see the United States play in Houston on Independence Day, as highlighted by host committee chairman John Arnold.

Canetti shared these updates during a news conference marking 500 days until the tournament. This event is part of a larger PR campaign across the host cities, including Miami, Toronto, and Mexico City.

Details about the costs of the stadium upgrades have not been disclosed yet. The local sports authority has not responded to inquiries about funding sources.

Security measures were also a major topic at the conference. Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia mentioned that a former SWAT commander from the Houston Police is overseeing security efforts. With recent tragic events in other cities, ensuring safety is a priority.

In addition to the renovations, Canetti announced a 38-day Fan Fest in East Downtown. This event will allow people to gather and watch matches on a big screen, no ticket required.

“While FIFA controls what happens inside the stadium, the Fan Fest will showcase Houston’s local culture,” Canetti said. It will be a chance for visitors to experience the city’s unique vibe.

Before the end of 2025, the local host committee will provide information about volunteer opportunities. Those interested in tickets can pre-register on FIFA’s website to stay updated before sales start in the fall.
