King William Wine Co. presents itself as a wine haven, but its food offerings need a closer look. While the website highlights wine clubs and memberships, the menu feels like an afterthought. There’s a “View menu” button, but don’t expect a gourmet listing; it primarily serves takeout.
As for the wine, co-owner Jill Arreguin showcases a vast selection. From zesty Etna Bianco to buttery white Burgundy, the choices are impressive. But the food sometimes misses the mark. One dish I tried was a “velvety, sherry-kissed” lobster bisque. While the idea was good, the execution wasn’t. The texture was grainy, and the bland baguette didn’t do justice to the soup.
For a more extensive experience, try the cozy dining room. The ambiance is dark and charming, perfect for enjoying bread service, pâtés, and mustards. However, the rustic bread at $9 felt underwhelming. It came with flavored butter that didn’t quite work and a selection of mustards that, while visually appealing, needed guidance on pairings.
The pâté trio offers an attractive spread, especially the silky foie gras, which pairs wonderfully with a balsamic drizzle. However, main dishes range from $28 to $64, and the quality varies. The acorn squash was lackluster, lacking seasoning and cohesion. In contrast, the coq au vin stood out. Tender chicken with a delightful sauce made it a highlight.
Dessert ended on a sweet note with Saffron Espuma resembling crème brûlée, its crisp top and creamy texture making it a delightful finish.
Despite some culinary hiccups, the service was commendable, and the atmosphere inviting. A casual wine at the bar or planning for their extravagant whole suckling pig could be worth your time.
Interestingly, the wine and dining scene in San Antonio reflects a growing trend. According to a recent survey by Wine Enthusiast, wine consumption in the U.S. saw a 6% increase in 2022, with more people showing interest in wine pairings with dining. It’s clear that while wine may take center stage, as diners become more adventurous, the food offerings at places like King William Wine Co. will need to keep up.
