Thrilling Victory: GCU Soars to 19-0 After Narrow Win Against Wisconsin!

Grand Canyon University (GCU) is on an impressive winning streak, recently notching two more victories. They beat Cal State Bakersfield 13-5 and then secured a close 9-8 win over Wisconsin. With a record of 19-0, they are just four wins shy of matching their program’s historical record of 23 consecutive wins, set last season. They also stand among the few undefeated teams in the nation after Florida lost to UCLA.

In the game against Bakersfield, GCU dominated early. The Lopes scored five runs in the second and third innings. Pitcher Maggie Place had a solid outing, allowing just one run in three innings and moving to 3-0 this season. The offensive highlight came from players like Syd McCray and Raegan Holtorf. McCray set the tone with her speed, stealing four bases across both games, bringing her season total to 13 without being caught. Holtorf contributed significantly, hitting a double and a home run, driving in four runs in the game.

Notably, three players achieved their first collegiate hits during this game, marking an exciting moment for the team.

The nightcap against Wisconsin was intense. After a rocky start, giving up a run in the first inning for only the second time this season, GCU rebounded. They answered with three runs, including an RBI double from Emily Gonzalez. Freshman Addison Shifflett also had a standout performance, going 2-for-2, which boosted her batting average to .442.

In another impressive display, GCU tallied a season-high 16 hits against Wisconsin. McCray continued her hot streak, going 4-for-4, enhancing her reputation as a multidimensional player. Something to note: head coach Shanon Hays praised her for being one of the best base runners in the country.

Wisconsin made a fierce comeback, scoring six runs in the later innings, but GCU held on for the win. The Lopes used a team pitching strategy, with Oakley Vickers claiming the win after pitching in relief.

Looking ahead, GCU will face Eastern Illinois and UC Riverside next. As they continue to build on their remarkable start, fans are eager to see if they can extend their winning streak even further.
