Cuban Authorities Respond to Boat Attack
Cuban officials recently provided details about a dramatic incident involving a Florida-flagged speedboat that attacked Cuban troops. This confrontation occurred off the island’s northern coast, resulting in the deaths of four attackers.
The suspects, ten Cuban nationals, had originally set off from the U.S. in two boats. However, one boat failed, prompting the group to move all supplies to the second vessel and leave the first adrift. According to the Cuban government, they quickly notified the U.S. Coast Guard about their situation.
Onboard the speedboat were high-powered weapons, over 12,800 rounds of ammunition, pistols, helmets with cameras, and military-grade boots. Colonel Ivey Daniel Carballo from the Cuban Border Guard Troops stated, “We were clearly facing a terrorist action from a boat coming from the United States.”
When Cuba’s border patrol boat approached the suspect vessel, it was met with heavy gunfire. Carballo detailed how three attackers were killed immediately, while a fourth died later due to injuries. The clash was intense, with authorities noting 13 bullet holes in their boat and 21 on the attackers’ vessel.
Victor Eduardo Álvarez Valle, a Criminal Investigation head at the Ministry of the Interior, expressed surprise at the level of resistance they faced. “We didn’t expect it, especially with that many people and weapons,” he said.
The suspects’ military equipment led authorities to uncover extensive training and financial backing for their activities. However, there’s no evidence yet that they had support networks within Cuba.
Those arrested may face severe charges, which could lead to long prison sentences or even life in prison. Cuba’s chief prosecutor noted that terrorism charges carry stiff penalties, although the death penalty has not been enforced for over ten years.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that this incident was not a U.S. government operation, stating that the American government is still gathering information on the incident.
