Amrit Bharat Station Scheme: Upgrading Tamil Nadu’s Railway Stations
On March 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open eight newly redeveloped railway stations in Tamil Nadu. This initiative is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), which started in 2022. The goal of ABSS is to enhance and modernize railway stations across India.
The eight stations getting a facelift are:
- Morappur
- Bommidi
- Srivilliputtur
- Sholavandan
- Manaparai
- Pollachi Junction
- Karaikkudi Junction
- Thiruvarur Junction
These are all managed by the Southern Railway zone.
Bommidi station is a highlight, featuring new amenities like a waiting hall, ticket office, lounge, ATM, catering area, parking, and enhanced accessibility. According to the Ministry of Railways, these updates blend modern features with local architectural styles. The upgrades also include improved buildings, new platforms, elevators, escalators, and facilities for people with disabilities.
Overall, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is set to revamp 69 more stations in Tamil Nadu. Enhanced connectivity and station accessibility will direct improve the travel experience for many.
A recent survey by the Ministry of Railways found that 70% of passengers prioritize modern amenities at railway stations. This reflects a larger trend in public transport: people want cleanliness, safety, and convenience in their travels.
