Matson is stepping up to help the Hawaiʻi Foodbank as food demand grows across the islands. They are increasing their support by shipping more containers filled with food, committing to send 400 containers from the mainland U.S. until 2027.
This new effort builds on Matson’s previous six-year, $10 million pledge. With these shipping contributions, the Hawaiʻi Foodbank can use its funds more effectively to buy crucial food supplies for those in need.
“Food insecurity affects nearly a third of families in Hawaiʻi, impacting our communities significantly,” said Matt Cox, CEO of Matson. He emphasized the company’s commitment to ensure families have the food they require.
Thanks to the savings on shipping, the foodbank can focus on distributing more food statewide, maximizing their impact. Each of the new containers can hold about 42,000 pounds of food, which translates to approximately 3.5 million meals for families across Hawaiʻi.
Amy Miller, President and CEO of Hawaiʻi Foodbank, shared how important this partnership is. “Matson’s reliable shipping allows us to bring in more food and focus our budget on purchasing nutritious items at lower prices. Many families here are just one or two paychecks away from food insecurity, and this support will help tens of thousands of people across the islands.”
Recent statistics indicate that 32% of Hawaiʻi households faced food insecurity in the 2024–2025 period, highlighting the urgent need for support (source: Hawaiʻi Foodbank).
The collaboration between Matson and the Hawaiʻi Foodbank showcases how businesses can positively impact their communities. By working together, they are helping to ensure that families receive the vital food resources they need to thrive.
