Unlock Enhanced Gaming: PS5 Pro to Receive Exciting Upscaling Upgrades This March!

Sony is about to make a big splash with a software update for the PS5 Pro, scheduled for March. This update brings a new version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an exciting upscaling technology. Mark Cerny, the mastermind behind the PS4 and PS5, shared the news on the PlayStation blog. One of the first titles to benefit will be Resident Evil Requiem.

So, what exactly is PSSR? According to Cerny, it’s an AI tool that examines each pixel in the gaming graphics. This allows it to improve the visual quality of games while keeping the resolution manageable. The upcoming version of PSSR has gone through some major tweaks, which helps maintain both the framerate and the sharpness of images.

In the blog, Cerny even provided comparison images to showcase the differences in visual fidelity. Masaru Ijuin from Capcom chimed in on how the new tech enhances Resident Evil Requiem. He noted how the upgraded graphics personalize the main character’s look. Specifically, each strand of hair moves fluidly, reacting to shifts in the body and wind, aiming to deepen players’ immersion in the game. He stated, “The detailed expression of texture is one of the many facets that we want our fans to appreciate.”

In 2024, Sony and AMD teamed up for “Project Amethyst,” focusing on machine-learning advancements for graphics. This collaboration seems to be paving the way for better performance and energy efficiency in future gaming systems. Improvements from this partnership are already making their way back to the PS5 Pro, hinting at future enhancements for both graphics and gameplay.

Additionally, surveys show that gamers are eager for these kinds of updates. A recent poll found that nearly 70% of players value enhanced graphics as a key factor when deciding on new games. It’s clear that the push for better visuals resonates with the gaming community.

Sony’s PSSR update represents a significant leap, promising to elevate the gaming experience for PS5 Pro owners. This upgrade can be toggled in the console’s settings, giving players the choice to switch it on or off. For those who invested around $700 (or $750 now) in their PS5 Pro, this added performance boost is a comforting sign that Sony is committed to delivering value.
