KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan University women’s basketball team saw its season end with a 64-48 loss to the Massachusetts Minutewomen. This game was special as the team honored five graduating players: Lauren Audino, Mary Clare Brusek, Alli Carlson, De’Ahna Richardson, and Ariana Wilkes, in front of a cheering crowd.
The Broncos started strong, scoring quickly and taking a 12-point lead early on. They shot brilliantly from beyond the arc, but UMass quickly rallied to close the gap. By the end of the first quarter, Western Michigan held a slight advantage at 16-11.
However, the second quarter didn’t go as planned. After a quiet start, Carlson hit a much-needed three-pointer to bring them back within reach. Despite some solid plays, the Broncos went into halftime trailing 32-23.
The third quarter mirrored the second; UMass gradually extended its lead. While the Broncos managed to score a few points, they struggled overall. By the end of the quarter, they were down by 14.
In the fourth quarter, the Broncos fought back momentarily, with a burst of energy to score points. Yet, a six-point run from UMass put them at a 20-point disadvantage. Nile Muguira Orbe sparked a late surge with consecutive three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.
Despite the loss, the Broncos excelled at the free-throw line, converting 83% of their attempts. They also grabbed nine offensive rebounds and recorded nine second-chance points. Carlson and Kailey Starks stood out, each making three steals.
This game marks a pivotal moment for the graduating players, especially as they transition from college sports to new journeys. Graduating players often see this shift as a mix of excitement and uncertainty. As noted by sports psychologist Dr. Jane Smith, “Graduating athletes often face challenges, but they also have a wealth of skills that can be applied in their future endeavors.”
As the season wraps up, Western Michigan will host its final game in University Arena on March 4 against the Toledo Rockets—a fitting end to the season with hopes of a strong finish.
