Mural Revival at Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital
Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital is celebrating the return of its beloved tunnel murals with a special event on March 5. They’re hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony and guided tours from 5 to 7 p.m. This is a chance for everyone to appreciate the colorful artwork created by local high school students.
These murals first came to life in 2009 at the former West Shore Medical Center. Hospital leaders wanted to foster wellness and connection, so they turned to local students during visits of the Fit Kids program. They saw the students’ creativity as a unique opportunity.
Over several volunteer weekends, high school art students and teachers painted 17 large murals in the tunnel that connects the hospital to the Medical Care Facility. Using donated supplies, they transformed a simple tunnel into a vibrant gallery that represents movement and healing. Each mural measures 4 by 10 feet and showcases the talents of these young artists.
Peter Marinoff, CEO of Munson Healthcare South Region, remarked, “These murals reflect the heart of Manistee—creativity, collaboration, and care. By reviving them and offering tours, we honor the students who gifted our community with something lasting.”
The first-floor mural exhibit will be fully accessible, and hospital staff will lead the tours through the tunnel. Photographers Carol Lynne Locey and Steve Growcock have also played a crucial role in preserving the murals, capturing the community’s spirit through their lenses.
This revival not only highlights artistic talent but also strengthens community ties. In recent years, public art projects have gained popularity across the nation, with surveys showing that communities with vibrant public art see increased engagement and pride among residents.
