During the women’s race, Jess McClain was leading when a guide vehicle mistakenly led her and other top runners off course. Molly Born, who was trailing by over a minute, ended up winning the race. Carrie Ellwood and Annie Rodenfels took second and third place, while McClain finished ninth. This mishap cost McClain not only the race but also a chance at the $20,000 winner’s prize.
In an official statement, USATF explained, “The course was not adequately marked at the point of misdirection.” Despite the confusion, they stated that the results would not be changed, and the final placements remain as posted.
