Jayme Lawson, star of Sinners, recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the controversial incident at the BAFTA Awards. She praised Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo for their calm reactions when John Davidson, a guest with Tourette Syndrome, shouted a racial slur while they were presenting.
Lawson highlighted a bigger issue from that night. She feels that true inclusivity means more than just inviting people into a space. It requires ensuring everyone’s safety and comfort. “Just because you let someone in doesn’t mean it’s inclusive,” she said. For her, what happened that night showed a lack of understanding about how to support all individuals in public spaces.
She criticized the BAFTA organization and the BBC for not handling the situation better. Lawson pointed out that while certain offensive language was censored during the broadcast, they failed to protect Jordan and Lindo. “You show you care by censoring some voices while neglecting others,” she stated. “That says a lot about how marginalized individuals are treated.”
At the NAACP Image Awards, Regina Hall asked the audience to applaud Jordan and Lindo, which they did enthusiastically. Lindo took the opportunity to express gratitude for the support. He said the incident turned from a negative experience into something positive, emphasizing the importance of community and solidarity in the face of adversity.
This incident underscores a larger cultural conversation about safety and respect in media spaces—particularly for Black artists. According to a 2022 survey by the Hollywood Diversity Report, Black representation in film hasn’t seen significant improvements over the past decade, highlighting the ongoing need for institutional change in the industry. This reflects a continual struggle within entertainment to create spaces that are not only inclusive but also affirming.
