Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi recently shared some strong ideas about India’s future. He emphasized that to reach the goal of a developed India by 2047, we need to embrace technology. In his speech at the 14th ThinkEdu Conclave, he pointed out that mastering emerging tech like artificial intelligence (AI) is essential for this vision.
Ravi expressed that achieving this goal isn’t just a hopeful dream but a necessary step for our nation. If we don’t succeed, he warned, the consequences could be severe. He believes that changing our education system is crucial, as highlighted in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This policy aims to update how we learn and prepare students for the future.
Looking back at history, he reminded us that India was once an economic leader, excelling in textiles, agriculture, and metallurgy before colonization changed everything. After that, Europe gained power with new technologies like gunpowder and steam engines, leading to approximately 300 years of dominance.
The landscape shifted again in the mid-20th century when the U.S. developed nuclear technology. This altered global power dynamics, moving influence from England to America. The U.S. maintained its position by focusing on constant innovation, especially in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Ravi noted that every major tech advancement has widened gaps between those who have access and those who don’t. He highlighted that AI could exacerbate these divides. “AI is a transformative technology that empowers individuals and nations,” he stated, urging India to create its own specific AI models. This would help avoid simply copying energy-intensive systems from Silicon Valley.
Recent surveys show that a significant majority of educators believe incorporating technology into learning can boost student engagement. In fact, a report from the Pew Research Center found that 89% of teachers see positive changes when technology is integrated into their classroom strategies.
In conclusion, as we move forward, we must remember the past while embracing innovation. Technology can be our bridge to a brighter future, but we have to be proactive in harnessing it effectively.
