Dominiq Ponder, a 23-year-old sophomore quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes, tragically passed away in a car accident early Sunday morning. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 200 pounds, Ponder played for Colorado for two years.
Head coach Deion Sanders confirmed the news, expressing his condolences on Twitter. “God please comfort the Ponder family, friends, and loved ones,” he wrote. “Dom was one of my favorites! He was loved, respected, and a born leader. Let’s pray for all who knew him.”
Ponder transferred to Colorado from Bethune-Cookman, where he started his college career but didn’t see any game action during his first year. He redshirted before making the move to Colorado.
In 2024, Ponder suited up for Colorado but did not make a significant impact in his first season. By 2025, he played in two games, making his debut against Arizona. He attempted one pass and had two rushing attempts, though he lost yardage on those carries. He also contributed on special teams during a game against West Virginia.
Before college, Ponder was an unrated recruit in some rankings but earned a three-star status from 247Sports, ranking as the No. 164 quarterback in his class. He hailed from Opa Locka, Florida, and played high school football at both Carol City High School and Naples High School. During his sophomore season at Naples, he threw for 511 yards and 10 touchdowns while also running for 356 yards.
