Inside the Dream Home of Hollywood’s Power Couple: Crafting the Ultimate Space for Hosting Unforgettable Cocktail Parties

In the hunt for a new home, many people crave tranquility. For Hollywood couple Nanatchka Khan and Julia Bicknell, the goal was more vibrant. “We entertain a lot,” Khan smiles, noting their lively lifestyle. As the director of Always Be My Maybe and creator of shows like Fresh Off the Boat, Khan brings a creative touch to everything she does. Together with Bicknell, who has credits on Yellowjackets, they teamed up with realtors Heather T. Roy and Learka Bosnak from Douglas Elliman. They instantly fell in love with a five-bedroom, seven-bath home in Lake Hollywood, even though it was still being built.

Khan and Bicknell wanted their home to reflect their personality. “It should be functional and inviting, yet stylish,” Khan explains. Interior designer Martha Mulholland, a friend of Khan’s sister-in-law, came highly recommended by comedian Ali Wong. “It felt like kismet,” adds Khan.

Mulholland has a rich background in art history and historic preservation and has worked for big names like Gucci. Her approach focuses on creating beautiful, meaningful spaces. “I like to educate my clients so they feel connected to their home,” she shares.

Understanding the couple’s vibrant spirit was essential for Mulholland. From their love for bobbleheads, Dolly Parton, and cocktails, it was clear they were fun-loving. “I aimed to create a space that felt joyful and welcoming,” she says. They embraced a “more-is-more” philosophy, opting for colorful rooms that reflect their lively lifestyle.

One major challenge for Mulholland was defining the purpose of each space. The dining room needed to make a statement, as it’s the first room visitors see. They settled on a cheerful yellow wallpaper from a historical design made in the 1920s. With a bright, inviting color scheme, the space encourages gatherings, featuring plush seating and a well-stocked bar, ideal for hosting friends.

The screening room transformed from bland to bold, now sporting vivid red seating and golden accents. Mulholland infused character with a playful toile wallpaper showcasing Los Angeles landmarks. Her creative touches extend throughout the house, including colorful furniture around the pool and a whimsical mural by Bicknell in their daughter’s room. “It’s a joyful home that reflects who they are,” Mulholland concludes.

Home design trends today encourage personalization and color, as homeowners seek to express their unique stories. Recent data from a survey by the National Kitchen & Bath Association shows a growing inclination towards vibrant hues and innovative layouts, echoing the style found in Khan and Bicknell’s home.

As we shift our focus from sterile minimalism to homes filled with personality, stories like theirs serve as a reminder to embrace creativity. Celebrity homes can inspire us to think about how we want to live and share spaces with those we love.
