The Tigers have announced a new venture called Detroit SportsNet. This platform will stream games for both the Tigers and the NHL’s Red Wings. Fans can subscribe for $19.99 a month or $189.99 for a year. While the games will also air on television, full cable and satellite details are still coming.
Until recently, the Tigers were partnered with Main Street Sports, formerly known as Diamond Sports Group. This company faced financial troubles and missed payments to several MLB teams, prompting the Tigers, among others, to end their contract in January. Six teams quickly switched their broadcasts to Major League Baseball, leaving the Tigers, Angels, and Braves to figure out their next steps.
Atlanta has since launched its own regional sports network called BravesVision, but the Tigers have taken a different approach. Their announcement highlighted that Detroit SportsNet will be “Powered by MLB.” This means fans can stream games through the MLB app, combining the Tigers and Red Wings into one subscription service—a smart move, especially given that both teams are owned by the Ilitch family.
However, this change raises questions about revenue. Teams switching to MLB often see a drop in earnings. For instance, a recent report from Travis Sawchik of MLB.com notes that they typically earn about 50% less than before the change. A few years ago, the Tigers were bringing in around $60 million from their previous deal. Bundling the Red Wings and Tigers could attract more subscribers, but revenue might still be split between the two teams.
The Tigers have faced other financial changes this winter. Notably, pitcher Tarik Skubal won an arbitration case, leading to a surprising salary of $32 million—significantly higher than the team’s $19 million proposal. Despite uncertainties surrounding broadcasting and Skubal’s raise, the Tigers have been active in the free agency market, signing key players including left-hander Framber Valdez to a $115 million deal. They are on track to set a franchise record for payroll.
As for the upcoming broadcasts, fans can expect a familiar feel with the on-air talent returning. However, specific television details and access to Red Wings games on the app are still pending.
