ST. LOUIS, Mo. — CareSTL Health has closed its last location on Martin Luther King Drive, at least until March 9. Concerns about the facility’s financial state have been brewing for a while.
Pam Marshall, the former pharmacy director at CareSTL, noted that problems began as early as February 2024, when a widespread cyberattack disrupted federal funding. Shortly after, another blow hit when the clinic on Homer G. Phillips closed due to HVAC issues.
By September 2024, things took a turn for the worse when their drug supplier suspended services. “Our account was suspended because we hadn’t been paid,” Marshall explained. She observed that financial strain affected many departments, leading to layoffs and unpaid accounts, some dating back to April 2024.
On March 9, CareSTL Health announced a temporary closure of its centers to stabilize operations and address payroll issues. Patients felt the impact immediately. One patient, Gina, expressed frustration and concern, saying, “I took my last pill today. I’m trying to figure out what’s next.”
The president of CareSTL Health, Angela Clabon, mentioned in a statement that the clinic relies on federal grants, which are currently processed on a reimbursement basis. She also noted a significant drop in revenue—about 50%.
Marshall, who left the organization in April 2025, shared her worries about the community’s situation. “It’s awful what’s happening, and I hope for a resolution soon,” she said.
