In the Hays area of Al-Jarrahi District, 75-year-old Ali Salem faces tough times. He lives in a small house with his wife and seven children. Life has been hard for the family. One of Ali’s sons, 25 years old, has a mental disability. His 18-year-old daughter is fighting cancer, and his wife struggles with a spinal issue. Unemployed and living in poverty, Ali depends on humanitarian aid for food and medicine.
Ali expressed his struggles, saying, “We’ve lived in miserable conditions for four years. I wish I could work to provide for my family, but my age limits me.” He adds, “It’s hard to get the medication my son needs.”
To help families like Ali’s, the Building Foundation for Development (BFD) launched the Unconditional Cash Transfer (UCT) project. This initiative aims to improve food security and living conditions for vulnerable families in Al-Jarrahi. It provides direct cash assistance, allowing families to prioritize their needs like food and water.
After learning about this project, Ali applied and became one of 361 beneficiaries. He received three cash installments, totaling around 170 USD. This assistance will continue until 2025, helping families improve their situations over time.
Before the aid, Ali often had to skip meals and borrow money for his family’s needs. The cash support changed that. He could buy essential groceries and medicines for his daughter. Ali shared his relief: “I used to worry every day about where our next meal would come from. Now, I can focus on my daughter’s treatment and not stress over food.”
According to a recent report by the World Food Programme, around 16 million people in Yemen are facing food insecurity as the conflict continues. Aid projects like the UCT are vital for families struggling to meet even their basic needs. With this kind of support, hope can return even in the bleakest situations.
In a society where resilience is tested daily, stories like Ali’s remind us of the impact of humanitarian efforts. They show that with help, families can reclaim a sense of stability amidst chaos.
