Indian Railways is set to enhance the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat service by increasing its length to a 20-coach rake. This upgrade aims to meet the rising passenger demand on this vital route, which connects the Jammu region with the scenic Kashmir Valley.
The decision comes as passenger traffic continues to grow, especially during peak seasons like the pilgrimage to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra. This increase will greatly enhance seat availability for travelers.
The Katra–Srinagar route is a key segment of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, one of Indian Railways’ major infrastructure initiatives. Improved rail connections are expected to boost tourism, facilitate easier travel for residents, and stimulate local economies.
Before finalizing the upgrade, officials are examining the technical feasibility, adjusting platform lengths, and addressing operational logistics. If the upgrade receives approval, it will become one of the country’s longest Vande Bharat train configurations.
The Vande Bharat Express is celebrated for its modern look, quick acceleration, and passenger-friendly features. This enhancement is anticipated to further improve connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir, addressing the increasing travel needs of passengers.
Implementing the longer train will require adjustments, including refining schedules and planning for maintenance. Teams are currently assessing the capacities of platforms at major stations along the route to avoid service disruptions.
