Retired U.S. Army Colonel Laurie Buckhout is set for a rematch against incumbent Congressman Don Davis in North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District. Buckhout won the Republican primary, securing her spot after a competitive race against four other candidates. This year, the newly redrawn district leans more conservative, increasing her chances for the general election.
In her victory speech, Buckhout emphasized her military background. “I’m ready to take mission-first leadership to Washington,” she stated, highlighting her commitment to safety and a stronger economy for Eastern North Carolina.
The redistricting has made this contest especially intriguing. Previously, the district supported Trump with about 51% of the vote. Now, the Republican candidate could capture over 55%. In 2024, Buckhout narrowly lost to Davis, gaining 47.8% of the votes, while Libertarian candidate Tom Bailey siphoned off 2.6%. Analysts suggest Bailey’s presence may have played a spoiler role in the tight race.
Buckhout’s primary win came through significant personal investment in her campaign. She loaned her effort about $2 million, while her opponents also contributed their own funds—Russell lent $152,000, Hanig $150,000, and Buck $59,000. This strong financial backing, particularly from outside PACs, may set the stage for an expensive general election.
Experts note that with the 2020 election trends showing a shift toward conservative candidates in North Carolina, the results of this district could be indicative of broader political changes in the state. In fact, if Buckhout secures a win, North Carolina could shift from a delegation of 10 Republicans and four Democrats to 11 Republicans and three Democrats.
The district itself spans 23 counties, making it a crucial battleground. A recent study showed that swing districts like this one often determine the balance of power in Congress, illustrating how local votes can have national implications.
