Sri Lanka has reported the tragic sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, which occurred about 40 nautical miles off its southern coast. The frigate sent out a distress call early in the morning, prompting a rescue operation. So far, several bodies have been recovered, and 32 injured crew members have been rescued. There were around 180 crew members on board when the incident happened.
The exact cause of the sinking is still a mystery. The frigate had recently returned from participating in the 2026 International Fleet Review in Vishakapatnam, India. Sri Lankan officials sprang into action, deploying naval vessels and Air Force planes for the rescue mission. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath informed parliament about the urgency of the situation. Authorities are still trying to ascertain what happened to nearly 150 crew members who remain unaccounted for.

The sinking coincided with ongoing air strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, following the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and hundreds of others. In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile attacks on U.S. assets and allied countries in the Gulf, resulting in several casualties, including U.S. service members.
Comments from military experts underscore the unpredictable nature of naval operations. Retired naval officer Captain James Wright stated, “Incidents like these remind us of the dangers at sea, especially in such sensitive geopolitical climates.”
