Last month, Remedy hosted an online event to showcase Control Resonant, the sequel to their acclaimed game Control. The team shared some exciting details that caught many fans by surprise.
One key point was the role of Jesse Faden, the protagonist from Control. Contrary to what some might have assumed, she will not be a playable character in Resonant. The focus will be on her brother, Dylan, who will navigate the challenges of the game. Thomas Puha, the communications director, emphasized this distinction, explaining that while Jesse plays a pivotal role, the story centers on Dylan’s journey.
In contrast to the original Control, which leaned heavily on shooting mechanics, Control Resonant is shaping up to be an action RPG with a strong emphasis on melee combat. Players can expect to dive into multiple skill trees, enabling them to customize their character builds. Dylan wields a unique weapon called the Aberrant, which transforms and evolves as you progress. This adds an exciting layer to character development—players must make strategic decisions since not every ability can be unlocked in a single playthrough.
When asked about comparisons to popular titles like Dark Souls, the developers clarified that Resonant is not a “Souls-like” game. There’s no parry feature, encouraging players to adopt a more aggressive playstyle instead of merely reacting to attacks. “The goal is to keep the momentum going and ensure players are in charge during fights,” they said.
Remedy also focused on improving the gameplay experience with a refined map. Unlike the previous installment, which received criticism for its tricky navigation, the new map is designed to offer clear, enjoyable options. The game will include two main types of quests: the overarching narrative of “Dylan’s Journey” and standalone “World Quests,” which provide optional stories and side activities. Players can choose to explore secrets and lore within the game world, making it a place worth revisiting.
In terms of technical performance, Remedy is aiming for 60 frames per second across all platforms, including Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
The game also introduces a dialogue system that allows players to make choices while moving. This mechanic draws inspiration from Firewatch, enabling a seamless experience during character interactions. However, it’s important to note that while players can influence dialogues, the game will only have one definitive ending.
