Stefon Diggs Thanks Patriots for an Incredible Season After Reported Release: What’s Next for the Star WR?

After an exciting run to Super Bowl LX, the New England Patriots and veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs are parting ways. This change comes just a year after Diggs signed a three-year, $69 million contract.

Reports from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero indicate the team informed Diggs he will be released at the start of the new league year. This decision helps the Patriots save on salary cap space, relieving a $26.5 million cap hit scheduled for 2026. Michael Ginnitti from Spotrac noted that although this move incurs a $9.7 million dead cap charge, it frees up significant room for New England, adding to the team’s $35.3 million in cap space.

In his first year with the Patriots, Diggs had an impressive season, starting all 17 games and racking up 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns. However, his performance dwindled in the playoffs. In four postseason games, he managed only 14 catches for 110 yards, including just three receptions for 37 yards in a disappointing 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

Despite this, head coach Mike Vrabel praised Diggs, describing him as a “really good presence” throughout the season. Yet, the decision to release him seems to align with the Patriots’ strategy to pivot and possibly reshape their roster for future success.

As Diggs heads to free agency, he is expected to attract considerable interest from teams looking for a top-tier receiver. At 32 years old, he will undoubtedly be keen to join a squad that can help him chase a championship ring, advancing his already notable career.

The NFL landscape continues to evolve rapidly, with teams recalibrating for the upcoming season. With many veterans like Diggs entering free agency, it’s a pivotal moment for franchises seeking experienced talent to elevate their rosters.

This year’s trends highlight the increasing value of versatility in players. A recent survey by NFL.com revealed that teams prioritize adaptable players who can take on various roles. Diggs’ ability to create plays could position him as a key asset for a team ready to fortify its offensive strategy.
