WILMINGTON, N.C. – The East Carolina Pirates took home a solid 5-3 victory over the UNCW Seahawks. The game was filled with exciting moments and significant plays that helped secure the win.
The first couple of innings were scoreless. But in the third, Walker Barron kicked things off for the Pirates. He got on base and later advanced thanks to a mistake from the Seahawks. Shortly after, Burress came through with a hit, putting both players in scoring position. A wild pitch allowed Burress to score the first run for ECU. Grady Lenahan then added to the lead with a deep sacrifice fly, bringing Barron home.
Ryan Towers made his second start for ECU, pitching one inning and allowing only one hit. His defensive team capitalized on opportunities, turning double plays. Joseph Webb stepped in next. He had a standout performance, lasting over four innings and striking out five batters, his longest outing of the season. Although the Seahawks managed to score in the sixth, the Pirates quickly regained control with a double play, thanks to Barron and Colby Wallace. Sean Jenkins came in to finish the inning, allowing just one run and leaving two Seahawks stranded.
In the seventh inning, with two outs and two runners on base, Austin Irby made an excellent play, allowing Burress to cross home plate, bringing the score to 3-1 for ECU. The Pirates were just getting started. Colby Wallace hit a ball into right field, putting pressure back on the Seahawks. Brayden Bachman, a pinch hitter, hit his first career double, putting both himself and Wallace in scoring position. Barron then added another run with a single, and Lenahan hit a sacrifice fly, scoring pinch runner Jeff Sabater.
Despite a late scare in the ninth inning when the Seahawks managed to score two runs with the help of pinch hitters, Brett Antolick closed out the game, securing the win for ECU.
The Pirates had 11 hits throughout the game, though they left 10 runners on base. Wallace and Lenahan both had strong performances, going 2-for-3, with Lenahan earning two RBIs. Key hits from Barron, Irby, and Bachman contributed to the Pirates’ successful outing.
