Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, is set to enhance its food pantry services thanks to a generous donation of $5,100 from the Sparklight Charitable Giving Fund. This contribution will help keep shelves stocked and support programs like emergency meal kits, birthday cake boxes, and cooking and budgeting classes.
Brandi Brooks, the Director of Enrollment Services at the college, expressed excitement about the donation. “This is such an exciting gift for us to receive. It allows us to offer not just food but also hygiene products,” she said.
The food pantry, established in 2019, has been a vital resource for students, serving hundreds each year. Located in the Baptist Student Union near the River Ridge Apartments, it is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This service caters to TRC students, faculty, and staff.
Emergency meal packs are available at all Three Rivers locations. Each pack provides one to two days’ worth of meals and essential supplies, ensuring that students have reliable access to food when needed.
Sparklight, the organization behind the donation, supports various nonprofits annually with grants totaling $250,000. “Sparklight is proud to support Three Rivers Endowment Trust’s important work to ensure students have the resources they need to stay focused, healthy, and on track toward graduation,” noted Travis Harr, Sparklight Senior Regional Director for the North Central region.
While food insecurity is a widespread issue, impacting one in ten Missourians, initiatives like this food pantry play a crucial role in alleviating the problem. According to the Missouri Food Bank Association, the need for food assistance has grown by 30% since the pandemic began, highlighting the importance of support systems in educational environments.
