Memphis Women’s Basketball Faces Tough Overtime Loss Against UAB
In a tightly contested game at Elma Roane Fieldhouse, the Memphis women’s basketball team fell to UAB, 79-76, in overtime. This exciting matchup showcased both teams’ determination, but unfortunately for the Tigers, the result wasn’t in their favor.
The Tigers started the game slowly, going scoreless for four minutes. UAB quickly jumped to an 8-0 lead. Although Memphis struggled early, Daejah Richmond shined with 23 points, a season high for her, while Tamya Smith recorded her second double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Memphis finally found their rhythm in the second quarter. After a rocky start, they launched an 8-0 run, closing the gap. A pivotal moment came when Jordan Hunter, back from injury, scored a season-high 14 points, making crucial contributions as the game progressed.
UAB relied heavily on their three-point shooting. They landed 12 threes, the most Memphis has allowed this season, demonstrating their sharp shooting skills with minimal attempts. Memphis initially took the lead in the third quarter but struggled to maintain it as UAB responded swiftly.
The game reached a fever pitch with just a second left when UAB’s Sofia Munoz was fouled while attempting a three-pointer. She calmly drained all three free throws, sending the game into overtime.
Unfortunately, UAB controlled the overtime period, thanks in part to Smallwood’s critical three-pointer. With seconds remaining, Memphis had a chance to tie but failed to convert, resulting in their second consecutive loss.
This game reflects how close the competition can be in women’s basketball. With every point counting, the Tigers must regroup for their final regular-season game against Wichita State, hoping to finish strong.
