Indian refiners are ramping up their purchases of Russian crude oil. This comes as India faces a pressing oil supply crunch linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Despite U.S. pressure to avoid Russian oil amid the Ukraine war, Indian companies are seeking new sources to ensure energy security.
India heavily relies on oil imports, especially from the Middle East, with about 40% of its supplies coming through the vital Strait of Hormuz. Currently, Indian reserves can only meet around 25 days of demand, making the situation critical.
Back in January, India began reducing its Russian purchases to ease U.S. sanctions pressure. This change allowed India to dodge hefty tariffs and secure a temporary trade deal with the U.S. However, recent developments indicate that the U.S. might be softening its stance, permitting India to increase its Russian oil imports due to potential shortfalls from the Middle East.
Reports indicate that Indian refiners, including major players like Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum, are engaging with traders for immediate delivery of Russian oil. So far, they’ve secured around 20 million barrels. Interestingly, prices for Russian Urals crude are now at a premium of $4 to $5 per barrel above Brent crude, a shift from the previous $13 discount observed in February.
As one trader put it, “India refiners are back in the market. More than prices, availability is what matters.” This highlights a growing trend where Indian companies are looking for reliable sources to stabilize their energy supply.
Recent statistics show that global crude oil prices have been fluctuating due to geopolitical tensions, impacting supply chains worldwide. For instance, a survey by the International Energy Agency reveals that many countries are diversifying their oil supplies to mitigate risks.
