The Austin Police Department recently released video and audio from the tragic shooting incident outside Buford’s restaurant, which resulted in three lives lost and many injuries.
At a press conference, Police Chief Lisa Davis highlighted critical details about the situation. The shooter, 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, was shot by police after he had opened fire on a crowd. Reports indicate that he had legally purchased both the semi-automatic handgun and the AR-15-style rifle used in the attack.
Before the shooting, Diagne used his SUV to target people outside the restaurant. Witness accounts suggest he fired shots indiscriminately into the crowd on West Sixth Street. When officers arrived, Diagne engaged them in gunfire. He was struck multiple times by police before being taken into custody.
Davis noted that a total of 19 individuals were hit by gunfire, with two still hospitalized—one in critical condition. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the shooting had any connections to terrorism, although there were indications found in Diagne’s vehicle suggesting a potential link.
In a chilling video captured at the scene, Diagne can be seen walking through a parking lot with the rifle, wearing a hoodie with the words “Property of Allah.” This footage, just like the body camera recordings of the officers, was shared to offer transparency and clarity about the chaotic events.
Experts in public safety have raised concerns about the prevalence of gun violence in the U.S. A recent study found that homicides involving firearms rose by 35% between 2019 and 2020, demonstrating the significant threat posed by easy access to weapons.
The police chief emphasized the importance of accountability. In response to the shooting, Travis County District Attorney José Garza stated that he would not prosecute the officers involved, citing their actions as heroic. Following the shooting, a vigil held at UT Austin honored the victims, including a university student among those killed.
