The High Point University women’s lacrosse team faced Elon University in a recent match, finishing with a score of 15-7. This game was significant as it was the Panthers’ fourth attempt to secure a win this season, and they currently sit at 0-5. Elon, on the other hand, improved their record to 3-2.
In the first half, the Panthers were on the board early with goals from Shannon Smith and Tatum Goettelmann. Smith’s goal came from an assist by Goettelmann, showcasing teamwork that kept the game exciting. Jaidyn Donley made a fantastic play, picking up a ground ball and delivering a perfect pass to Goettelmann to help narrow the gap.
However, Elon responded strongly, ending the half with a 4-0 run, leaving the Panthers trailing 10-2 at halftime. After the break, Lauren Pujolar scored her first collegiate goal from a free position shot, giving the Panthers a ray of hope.
The fourth quarter saw a surge from High Point, where they capitalized on free-position chances. Bella Germani and Rachelle Gauthier each scored, and in the final moments, Smith and Goettelmann connected for another goal. Donley finished strong with her first goal of the season, ending the last quarter on a high note with a 4-0 run for High Point. The Panthers were 4-for-7 on free-position shots during the match, highlighting their determination.
Notably, Donley and Goettelmann made their starting debuts this season, working alongside Kate Prentice. Madilyn Wargo also took the field, bringing fresh energy to the defense and helping shut Elon down in the final minutes.
Gracie Vickery stood out by winning four draw controls, demonstrating her skill and effort. In the second half, the Panthers outperformed Elon, winning the draw battle 6-4 and outscoring them 4-1 in the last quarter.
High Point will have a week to regroup before facing Liberty on Alumni Weekend, a chance to build on their late-game momentum.
In sports, each game offers a lesson, and the Panthers showed resilience despite the loss, setting the stage for improved performances ahead.
