United Airlines is stepping up its efforts to create a more peaceful flying experience. The company has updated its rules to enforce stricter noise regulations. Now, if passengers don’t use headphones for music, movies, or social media, they risk being removed from the flight or even banned from future travel.

This change is part of United’s revised Contract of Carriage, which lays out the terms for ticket holders. Among various reasons for removing a passenger—like disruptive behavior or inappropriate clothing—there’s now a clear directive about headphones.

Josh Freed, a spokesperson for United, explained, “We’ve always encouraged customers to use headphones when listening to audio content. It seemed like a good time to make that even clearer.”

Other airlines also promote headphone use, but United is the first to make it a specific requirement in their contract. For example, Southwest Airlines lists headphones as necessary in their FAQs, while Frontier includes similar guidance in their baggage policy.

This change comes amid a rise in reports of disturbances during flights, with incidents of unruly passengers becoming more common. A recent study found that nearly 1 in 4 travelers have witnessed disruptive behavior onboard. Such incidents highlight the need for more defined rules to ensure a calm environment for everyone.

By reinforcing these guidelines, United aims to minimize noise complaints and increase passenger comfort. It’s important to create a peaceful flying atmosphere, especially as air travel resumes its pre-pandemic hustle and bustle. This rule change could set a new standard in the industry and encourage other airlines to follow suit.
