The Ducks have made a significant move by acquiring defenseman John Carlson from the Washington Capitals. In exchange, they will give up a conditional first-round pick for 2026 or 2027 and a third-round pick in 2027.
Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek expressed enthusiasm about the trade, stating, “John Carlson brings leadership, character, and a high hockey IQ to our team. We’re excited to add a Stanley Cup winner to help us make a strong push.”
At 36 years old, Carlson has had a solid season, tallying 10 goals and 36 assists for a total of 46 points in 55 games. He leads all Capitals players in assists and ranks second in both points and goals. Notably, he stands 11th among all NHL defensemen for points and assists.
Carlson was drafted 27th overall by Washington in the 2008 NHL Draft. Over his 17 seasons with the Capitals, he amassed 771 points. This impressive total ranks him 24th among all-time NHL defensemen and fifth among those still active. He also holds several records for the Capitals, including most goals, assists, and points for defensemen. Throughout his career, Carlson participated in 137 playoff games, contributing 78 points.
He played a key role in the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup win, leading all defensemen in playoff scoring. His career highlights include being a Norris Trophy finalist and earning multiple All-Star selections. In particular, during the 2019-20 season, he had a standout year, scoring a career-high 75 points.
Carlson’s journey also includes representing Team USA in the Olympics and World Cup. He helped the U.S. secure a gold medal at the 2010 World Junior Championship, scoring the winning goal in the final.
The trade does come with conditions. The Ducks’ first-round pick is tied to their playoff qualification for 2026. If they don’t qualify, they will instead transfer their 2027 pick to Washington.
This trade reflects the Ducks’ ambition to strengthen their roster and compete in the tight NHL landscape. While Carlson brings experience and skill, it’s also a strategic move as teams jockey for position in the race for the Stanley Cup.
