The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania has honored Mercyhurst University President Kathleen A. Getz, Ph.D., with the 2025 Comm Award. This award recognizes her exceptional work in highlighting the value of higher education.
Getz received the “Distinguished Communicator” award for her editorial in the Erie Times News/GoErie.com. The piece, titled “Pennsylvania’s Private Universities Empower Outcomes, Student Choice,” was published on March 14, 2024.
In her editorial, Getz praised Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s plan to revamp the state’s higher education system. She appreciated his efforts to enhance public universities and make education more affordable. However, she pointed out a significant gap in the plan. Getz argued that it does not adequately recognize the important role private universities play in the state’s success. She emphasized the need to honor students’ choices in selecting the education that aligns with their personal goals.
Upon receiving the award, Getz expressed her gratitude to AICUP. She stated, “I am thankful for this honor, which reflects not only on me but also on the importance of private higher education in Pennsylvania. We need to advocate for students’ rights to choose their educational paths.”
