JERUSALEM (AP) — Recent events in Iran have raised serious concerns. Satellite images, along with expert evaluations and comments from a U.S. official, suggest that a devastating explosion at a school in Minab, killing many students, was likely due to U.S. airstrikes.
On February 28, this tragic incident resulted in more than 165 fatalities, with many being children. This is the highest civilian death toll reported since the war began, prompting strong criticisms from the United Nations and human rights organizations.
The school, located about 1,100 kilometers southeast of Tehran, has been largely destroyed, with evidence of a targeted strike seen in the damage patterns on the satellite images. Experts noted that the precision of the damage indicates a deliberate strike rather than a random bombing.
Iran quickly pointed fingers at Israel and the United States for the blast, while neither country has taken responsibility. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth mentioned during a Pentagon briefing that investigations are underway and reaffirmed that civilian targets are never intentionally struck.
Several factors suggest this was a U.S. operation. The school is situated next to a Revolutionary Guard base, and U.S. military officials have acknowledged conducting operations near the area prior to the incident. Moreover, a U.S. official expressed to the AP that the strike was likely from U.S. forces, although they spoke anonymously due to the sensitivity of the matter.
Military analyses point to a high possibility of an error. Experts have speculated that the U.S. may not have been aware that a school was located in the vicinity. Farzin Nadimi, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, noted that the strike might have been directed at military activities nearby, leading to this tragic outcome.
The significance of the location cannot be overlooked; schools are civilian targets protected under international laws. Elise Baker, a senior lawyer at the Atlantic Council, emphasized that the military cannot legally target schools, regardless of the affiliations of some students.
Video footage captured after the explosion shows freshly dug graves in a cemetery nearby, further illustrating the severe impact of the strike on the community.
As these events unfold, the situation illustrates a pattern of increasing tensions and tragic consequences for civilians in conflict zones. U.N. officials and various human rights groups have condemned the airstrike, stressing the need for transparency and accountability in investigations.
