Helping Neighbors in Need: The March of the Mayors in Mississippi
In Biloxi, Mississippi, mayors from across the state gathered for a heartwarming cause: the sixth annual March of the Mayors food drive. This event united over 200 volunteers dedicated to sorting and packing donations to help those in need.
Long Beach Mayor Tim Pierce felt excited about the strong turnout. “It’s my first year, and it’s amazing to see so many people from the coast participating,” he said. Waveland Mayor Jay Trapani echoed this sentiment, highlighting the generous spirit of the community.
Martha Allen Pierce, executive director of Extra Table, explained the inspiration behind the food drive. “The idea emerged from our shared spirit on the coast. We asked the mayors to share the story of Extra Table and collect a special item from their cities,” she said. The response was overwhelming.
Pierce noted the impressive donations, saying they had collected over a thousand cans of green beans alone. Gautier Mayor Casey Vaughan shared that his city collected more than 4,000 granola bars. Similarly, Waveland has a tradition of collecting rice. “The people of Waveland are very generous,” noted Trapani.
The collected food is packed into boxes and delivered to local pantries. “Today, we’ll pack between 2,500 and 3,000 boxes. The true winner is the community members who benefit,” said Margaret Ann Pierce, highlighting the essence of the event.
Support from local businesses is crucial for this initiative. Lisa Bradley from Ingalls Shipbuilding emphasized the importance of ensuring families are healthy and kids can go to school ready to learn. “It’s all about neighbors helping neighbors,” Vaughan added.
This year’s volunteer turnout reflects a growing trend in community involvement. According to a recent report from the National Philanthropic Trust, charitable giving increased by 5.1% in 2022, indicating that more people want to contribute to their communities.
Overall, the March of the Mayors exemplifies South Mississippi’s spirit of caring for one another. Residents are willing to lend a hand to those in need, reminding us all of the power of community.
