Fans of Disney’s 1973 animated film Robin Hood might be feeling a bit disappointed by the latest news. Filmmaker Carlos López Estrada recently revealed in a Reddit AMA that his planned live-action remake of the film won’t be happening. Initially geared for Disney+, the project was shelved as the pandemic hit.
Estrada expressed sadness, stating, “It’s dead, sadly.” He believed there was something truly special about the project, including unique music they had developed. While the ambition for a photorealistic musical has dimmed, he mentioned he considers independently reviving the idea with fresh characters.
Previously, it was reported that Kari Granlund was working on a different version of a Robin Hood remake that would blend live action and CG. Granlund is known for writing the screenplay for the 2019 Lady and the Tramp remake, which was Disney’s first to debut on a streaming platform.
Despite this setback, Disney has been busy with other remakes. A live-action version of Tangled is back on track, and the studio enjoyed success with a remake of Lilo & Stitch and Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa: The Lion King. Upcoming projects also include a live-action Moana and a spinoff focused on the villain Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.
The original Robin Hood stands out with its charming story told through animated animals. The film grossed over $32 million at the box office—equivalent to about $234 million today—and earned an Oscar nomination for the song “Love.”
Bob Iger, who is stepping down as CEO of Disney, mentioned during a call that the studio is reevaluating its strategy. He acknowledged the mistake of prioritizing quantity over quality in their streaming content.
Estrada also reflected on his time at Disney as the studio’s first director of color when discussing his experiences with Raya and the Last Dragon. He described those years as challenging but meaningful, hinting at some fascinating stories he might share in the future.
As Disney continues to reshape its focus on theatrical releases, fans will be watching closely to see what classic tales they choose to revisit next.
